Frank Lampard finally speaks on replacing Sarri at Chelsea
Zinedine Zidane and Frank Lampard have been identified by Chelsea as potential replacements for head coach Maurizio Sarri after internal discussions. Chelsea are understood to be very concerned about the team’s recent performances and results – the most recent of which was a home defeat to Manchester United that knocked them out of the FA Cup.
Three time UEFA winner Zidane has been rumored to have given Chelsea executives his 3 point agenda to join the club, a list that involves an improved contract offer for bel;gium captain Eden Hazard and a technical director to act as a middle man between him and Senior Chelsea executives Marina Granovskaia and Roman Abramovich.
Frank Lampard has been tipped as the fan favorites to succeed Maurizio Sarri at Chelsea if the under-fire manager is dismissed but Lampard’s inclusion comes as a surprise given his lack of managerial experience, but he has been impressive in his first season in charge of a club. The Chelsea legend has been mooted by fans due to his allegiances and not on merit.
But since speculation started to link with him the managerial post at Chelsea (according to Sky Sports), his Derby side have struggled to build on their positive start to the season. Lampard’s side were beaten 1-0 at home to relegation-threatened Millwall on Wednesday evening, which put a real dent in their hopes to finish inside the top six by the end of this year’s campaign.
But the Derby boss insists he isn’t surprised to be linked to the Chelsea managerial post, but insists that he is focused on the job at hand with Derby this season. “Nothing surprises me in football. There will be links all over the place. It doesn’t surprise me”, Lampard told the media following the Millwall defeat (quotes sourced from the Derby Telegraph).
I just have to focus on the job in hand here, I’m certainly not thinking about it, talking about it. “It is what it is. I’m the Derby manager, and we’re working hard every game here.” It’s unlikely to be the last we hear of speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea, but Derby supporters will be hoping that Lampard cans tick to his word and stick around with Derby as they challenge for promotion back to the top flight.
The Rams take on local rivals, Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Monday evening, where a defeat could put an end to their top six ambitions this season.
